Latte vs Flat White: What Is the Difference?
The Two Most Confused Coffees
Latte and flat white look almost identical from the outside: espresso and hot milk. However, the taste, texture, and coffee experience of these two drinks are quite different. In this guide, we examine the fundamental differences between them.
Latte (Caffe Latte)
History
Caffe latte means "milk coffee" in Italian. Originally, it was part of an Italian breakfast, made by mixing moka pot coffee with hot milk. The cafe latte as we know it today became popular in the US in the 1980s.
Preparation
1 shot espresso (30 ml)
240-300 ml steamed milk
Approximately 1 cm of milk foam on top
Usually served in a large glass
Taste
Milk-forward, subtle coffee
Creamy and smooth
Often served with flavoring syrups like chocolate, vanilla, or caramel
The ideal entry drink for coffee beginners
Flat White
History
The origin of the flat white is debated — both Australia and New Zealand claim it. It emerged in the 1980s and spread globally in the 2000s. It gained worldwide recognition when Starbucks added it to their menu in 2015.

Which One Is Right for Me?
Choose Latte If:
You love milky and smooth drinks
You are new to coffee
You want a large portion to sip slowly
You enjoy trying flavored coffees (vanilla, caramel)
You prefer the cold version (iced latte)
Choose Flat White If:
You want the coffee flavor front and center
You seek a more intense coffee experience
You prefer a small but satisfying cup
You are interested in specialty coffee
You love silky texture over thick foam
How to Make Them at Home
Homemade Latte
1. Prepare espresso or strongly brewed coffee
2. Heat milk and froth using a French Press (pump 20-30 times)
3. Pour frothed milk over the coffee
4. Serve in a large glass
Homemade Flat White
1. Prepare a double shot espresso (or strong moka pot coffee)
2. Heat milk to between 60-65 degrees Celsius
3. Create microfoam with a milk frother (no large bubbles)
4. Pour milk quickly over espresso — do not hold back foam with a spoon
5. Serve in a small cup
