Coffee Grinding Guide: How to Choose the Right Grind Size
Why Does Grind Size Matter So Much?
The moment you grind coffee beans, the process of releasing aromas and flavors begins. The correct grind size directly determines how long water contacts the coffee, the extraction rate, and ultimately the taste in your cup.
Too fine: Over-extraction, bitter and burnt taste
Too coarse: Under-extraction, watery and flavorless coffee
Grind Size by Brewing Method
Turkish Coffee — Extra Fine (Powder)
The finest grind level
Flour or powdered sugar consistency
Ideal for cezve/ibrik brewing
Coffee fully dissolves, leaving grounds at the bottom
Espresso — Fine
Table salt fineness
Brewed under high pressure in a short time (25-30 seconds)
Correct fineness creates creamy crema
Too fine clogs the machine, too coarse lets water pass too quickly
AeroPress — Fine-Medium
Between espresso and filter
Suitable for short brew times (1-2 minutes)
Optimized for pressure brewing
Flexible: can be adjusted finer or coarser
V60 / Chemex — Medium
Sea salt thickness
Ideal for pour-over method (3-4 minute brew)
Produces clean and bright flavors
Can be fine-tuned based on flow rate
Drip Coffee Maker — Medium
Standard filter coffee grind
Suitable for automatic drip machines
Yields consistent results
Most pre-ground coffee comes in this caliber
French Press — Coarse
Coarse sea salt thickness
Long brew time (4-5 minutes)
Metal filter means fine particles pass through
Coarse grind minimizes this issue
Cold Brew — Extra Coarse
The coarsest grind level
Steeped in cold water for 12-24 hours
Coarse grind prevents over-extraction
Results in smooth, sweet, and low-acid coffee
Burr vs Blade Grinder
Blade Grinder
Affordable
Inconsistent grind size
Can heat up and damage aromas
Acceptable for beginners
Burr (Conical/Flat) Grinder
Consistent and uniform grinding
Adjustable calibration
Preserves aromas
Much better results in the long run
The Importance of Freshly Ground Coffee
Coffee beans start oxidizing rapidly after grinding. Ground coffee begins losing aroma within 15-20 minutes.
Grind fresh before each brew whenever possible
If buying pre-ground, choose small packages
Store in an airtight container, in a cool and dark place
Do not refrigerate — moisture damages aromas
