What Is V60 Coffee? A Beginner's Guide to Hario V60 Pour-Over
What Is V60?
V60 is a conical coffee dripper introduced by Hario in 2004. The "V" in the name represents the conical shape, and "60" represents the 60-degree angle. It is the most popular pour-over method in the specialty coffee world.
3 Design Features of V60
1. 60-Degree Angle The wide-angle cone allows water to stay in contact with coffee longer. Lower angles drain too fast, wider angles too slow — 60° is the optimum.
2. Spiral Ribs The spiral ridges on the inner surface prevent the filter paper from sticking to the dripper. This ensures proper airflow and even extraction.
3. Single Large Hole There is one large hole at the bottom (Chemex has 1 small hole, Kalita has 3 holes). This means you control the flow rate — your pouring technique directly affects the result.
How V60 Works
V60 is a pour-over method — you brew by manually pouring hot water onto coffee. The process:
Filter paper is placed and rinsed (to remove paper taste)
Ground coffee is added
Bloom with a small amount of water (CO2 escapes, 30-second wait)
Remaining water is poured in 2-3 stages
Brewing ends when all water has drained (total 3-4 minutes)

V60's uniqueness: freedom of control. The single hole and thin filter give you the ability to shape the flavor profile with your pouring technique.
Why Is V60 So Popular?
Low cost: You can start at $10-25
Compact: Small and portable
Clear flavor profile: Highlights the subtle notes of coffee
Versatile: Works with light to dark roasts
Community: Massive community on YouTube, Reddit — easy to learn
V60 Sizes

Capacity
Use
01
1-2 cups (10-20g)
Single
02
1-4 cups (15-30g)
Most popular, flexible
03
3-6 cups (30-60g)
Couple or guests
Recommendation: If you're starting out, get size 02 — flexible, the most common size, and filter paper is easy to find.
V60 Materials
Material
Advantage
Disadvantage
Plastic
Best insulation, unbreakable, cheap
Visually plain
Ceramic
Visually appealing, retains heat
Must preheat, breakable
Glass
Transparent, observable
Doesn't retain heat
Metal
Durable, heats fast
Loses heat quickly
Recommendation: For performance, plastic (counterintuitively, but true). For aesthetics, ceramic.
What Do You Need for V60?
Starter kit: 1. V60 dripper ($10-25) — Hario V60 02 Ceramic 2. Filter paper ($5-10 / 100 sheets) 3. Server / glass carafe (like a pitcher, to collect the coffee) 4. Gooseneck kettle ($20-100) — for slow, precise pouring 5. Scale ($10-30) — for gram precision 6. Burr grinder ($100-500) — for fresh grinding
Total: ~$150-500 for a professional setup.

Plastic V60 vs ceramic — does taste differ? Slightly. Plastic retains heat better, giving more consistent extraction. Ceramic looks better but cools the brew unless preheated. For pure cup quality, plastic wins. For ritual and aesthetics, ceramic.
Why does my V60 always taste bitter? Likely too fine grind, or too high water temperature, or too long brew time (over 4 minutes). Try slightly coarser grind first.
V60 vs Kalita Wave — what should a beginner choose? Kalita Wave is more forgiving (3 holes regulate flow). V60 has higher ceiling (more control = more potential, but more skill required). Both excellent.
Can I use V60 with paper from another brand? Use Hario's original filter paper for best results. Other brands fit physically but may have different paper thickness/porosity, affecting brew time.
